Australian home solar decisions combine strong rooftop generation potential with federal STCs, state programs, retailer tariffs, and distribution-network limits. The right system depends on the property, electricity use, state, network, retailer, phase, export approval, and plans for a battery or electrification.
This hub routes readers through the current Australian decision path without mixing national concepts with state-specific rules.
Start with cost and STCs
Australia Solar Panel Cost and STCs explains how system size, equipment, roof, switchboard, network work, installation, certificate assignment, and finance shape the final price.
Australia Solar Panel Rebates and STCs covers the nationwide Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme and why the common “rebate” is normally an upfront certificate-assignment discount rather than a fixed cheque.
Compare at least several local cash quotes with gross price and STCs shown separately.
Battery support changed in 2026
Eligible solar-connected batteries can create STCs under the Cheaper Home Batteries Program. The calculation became tiered from 1 May 2026.
Australia Solar Battery Rebate Guide explains current eligibility, approved products, installer requirements, existing-battery rules, backup, and state support.
Size storage for load, solar surplus, tariff, power, and resilience rather than the largest discount.
Feed-in tariffs and electricity plans
Retailers credit eligible solar exports through feed-in tariffs. Offers can be flat, time-varying, or capped and may come with different usage and supply charges.
Australia Feed-In Tariffs and Export Limits separates retailer billing from the network's physical export approval.
The highest feed-in tariff does not automatically produce the lowest bill. Direct self-consumption often provides more value.
Network connection and exports
The distribution network service provider sets inverter, phase, connection, protection, and export conditions. A system may have more panel capacity than it can export, with excess generation serving onsite loads, charging storage, or being curtailed.
Australia Dynamic Export Limits explains flexible connections that vary export capacity with local grid conditions.
Obtain written approval and keep the connection agreement.
Virtual power plants
A VPP coordinates home batteries and may offer payments, tariffs, or discounts in exchange for control and availability.
Australia Virtual Power Plants covers dispatch, backup reserve, battery cycling, warranty, data, retailer lock-in, and exit terms.
Treat VPP participation as a service contract, not a free bonus.
State and territory pathways
Australia State Solar Rebates Hub maps federal and additional support across every jurisdiction.
Dedicated pages currently cover:
- NSW solar rebates and feed-in tariffs.
- Victoria solar rebates and batteries.
- Queensland solar rebates and feed-in tariffs.
Additional state pages should be created only when they can remain current and provide more than a changed state name.
NSW in 2026
NSW uses federal solar and battery STCs. Its earlier battery installation discount is suspended, while a VPP connection incentive remains. The Home Energy Saver program launched with zero-interest finance and announced targeted discounts under eligibility rules.
Retail feed-in tariffs are competitive, and connection conditions depend on Ausgrid, Endeavour Energy, or Essential Energy.
Victoria in 2026
Eligible households can access a Solar Homes PV rebate up to $1,400 and an equivalent interest-free loan. The relevant combined household income cap changed to $150,000 from 1 July 2026.
Solar Victoria no longer accepts new interest-free battery-loan applications. Victoria also ended its regulated minimum feed-in tariff from July 2025, leaving retailers to set non-negative offers.
Queensland in 2026
Federal STCs are the main broad installation discounts. South-east Queensland uses competitive retailer feed-in offers, while the Queensland Competition Authority sets the regional tariff annually.
Network and climate conditions vary substantially between Brisbane, regional, coastal, cyclone, and remote areas.
Equipment and installation
Use approved equipment required for applicable schemes and ensure designers and installers hold current accreditation and licences.

Australian connection, electrical, metering, and evidence requirements still need local verification.
A complete Australian quote should show
- Gross cash price.
- Solar and battery STCs separately.
- State rebate, loan, or VPP incentive separately.
- Exact equipment and approved-list status.
- Panel and inverter capacity.
- Network and export approval assumption.
- Annual and monthly production.
- Meter, switchboard, and access scope.
- Retail tariff and feed-in assumptions.
- Warranty and service pathway.
